Fire Destroys Much of Zoo Lake Bowls Clubhouse

In the early hours of 1 October 2025, a devastating fire ripped through the Zoo Lake Bowls Club clubhouse, leaving much of the building and its recent renovations in ruins.
At the time, the club was partway through a refurbishment, with roughly 65 % of the work completed, in preparation for a grand reopening. The blaze is suspected to have originated in the kitchen area, and the building’s wooden structure are believed to have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.
Emergency services were alerted shortly before 7 a.m., and teams from Fire Ops SA and the City of Johannesburg responded promptly. By the time they arrived, the fire had already claimed large sections of the roof; within hours, parts of the structure collapsed. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were sustained.

The loss extends well beyond bricks and mortar. The clubhouse was more than a venue — it was a hub of community. It hosted bowls matches, live match screenings, weddings, gatherings, youth and cultural programmes, and countless informal moments of connection. Many staff members and dependents now face uncertainty, and local residents have been left heartbroken by the sudden destruction.
